HELP FOR COUNTRY WOMEN

The urgent need for housekeepers to assist women in the country was stressed by the president (Mrs W. F. Field) at a meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the W.D.F.U. Mrs Field announced that, owing to the impossible position she was in as housekeeper-secretary for the Wellington central provincial area, due to the fact that she could not find women who would go into the country and help, her health could not stand the worry any longer and she had felt it necessary to resign. She added that as many as seven times in one afternoon she had received telephone calls from country women appealing for help and, despite every effort to find someone who would assist even for a short time, she had nothing to report but failure. Mrs Field said that the position had grown so desperate, especially the plight of expectant mothers, many of whom were ill, that she considered that women’s organisations should petition tlrn Government with a view to having the housekeeping work declared essential. Many of the women in the country were doing men’s work on the farms and when the day was done had to come inside and attend to the family’s needs.
