SITUATION IN ALEUTIANS
RUGBY, Oct. 7. In announcing that the Japanese appear to have abandoned the islands of Attu and Agattu at the western end of the Aleutian chain, a United States Navy communique says: “In the latter part of September army aircraft bombed Attu, destroying most of the buildings on the island, and a study of photographs which were taken during the raid revealed no trace of the enemy on Attu at that time. A similar situation has been observed on Agattu. “Attacks by our aircraft on Kinka continue. On Monday army Liberators with fighter escort dropped many liighexploslvcs and incendiaries in the camp area. Hits were made on a seaplane hangar, and six enemy seaplane fighters wore 6hot down. All our planes returned.”—Official Wireless.
The two islands which the Japanese have loft are those nearest to the Soviet Far East territory.. Attu was formerly an advanced American base.
