TEN THRUSTS A DAY
FURIOUS NAZI EFFORTS FAILURE AT STALINGRAD LONDON, Oct. 8. As many as 10 assaults a day are being mado by the Germans in their furious attempt to gam possession of the factory settlement in the north-west of Stalingrad, bub they have made no further progress in the last 24 hours, while the Russians have made some gains in places. The Red Star says that the Rus■ians are digging in in the areas retaken, and Marshal Timoshenko s forces have made further progress north-west of the city. After further heavy fighting the Germans at heavy cost succeeded in gaining possession of two streets. A Berlin spokesman says that further German infantry • attacks at Stalingrad are not necessary as the objects have been achieved and the rest can bo done by artillery and dive-bombers. The German thrust in the direction of Mozdok has been halted at the outskirts of a village, while in mountainous country the Russians ambushed a number of enemy tanks. On the Leningrad front the fighting has become more violent as the enemy has launched several counterattacks aimed at retaking lost positions. Many thousands of casualties have been inflicted on the enemy, who is being successfully held.
