FALLING ROLLS

DISTRICT SCHOOL FIGURES. In no fewer than nine out of the ■j years up to 1941 a decrease wa3 recorded in the aggregate of the school rolls in the Wanganui_ Education Board's district, which includes Palmerston North and tho surrounding area. The only year in which there was an increase was 1936, when five-year-old pupils were again admitted after an interval.

Within the Palmerston North city area nearly all the schools have been affected by some particular circumstance, such as the institution of tho State housing block at West End, which precludes a true comparison of the rolls. The Central School has possibly been the most stable in regard to the district from which it draws its pupils, and from 1937 uutil 1942 there has been little change in this school's infant roll. In the former year this stood at 224 and in 1938 it fell to 181, but it has now risen to 219.

Taken over the whole of the Wanganui Education Board's district, however, the figures of tho primary and intermediate rolls generally show a very different story. These, supplied "through the courtesy of the board's secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) commence with an increase of 130 in 1931 over the total of 1930. The figure for 1932 shows the big reduction of 942, but this was due mainly to the raising of the school entrance ago to six years. Then follow three further years of decreases until the increase of 960 is recorded when tho five-year-olds were readmitted in 1936. Thereafter the fall continues for five successive years. The tabulated figures for the whole of the board's district

Figures taken from the Official Year Book show that tho aggregate number of pupils in schools under tho control of the nine education boards in the Dominion (secondary departments and district high schools excluded) dropped from 216.698 in 1930 to 203.951 in 1940 (the last year for which the statistics are available). This is a reduction of 12,747.
