THE CITY’S CLOCK

HOPES FOR RETENTION,

The possibilities of incorporating the town clock, now housed above the Chief Post‘Office (in the tower which is to be removed), in the general design of the new Municipal Chambers are being examined. The Mayor (Mr Alansford) stated to-day that it was hoped to include the clock in the building, either as a whole or in part. Several problems are involved; for instance, the incorporation of the clock itself and its situation in tho building is the first item; also whether the chimes should be included. The clock, which was bought with monev raised by the then Afayoress (Airs W. T. AVood) is regarded as the property of the citizens. No decision has been made, however, and the works committee of the City Council has vet to consider plans for tho new building. Following that, the matter would not be decided until the committee’s decision is ratified in open council. In the meantime tho initial work has been undertaken for the demolition of the first of the City Council buildings to be taken down, the old Colonial Bank premises. Window frames and glass, doors and such parts were being removed this morning.
