W.C.T.U.
The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U., was held on Tuesday. After devotional exercises, led by Mrs T. R. Plodder, the president welcomed visitors from other organisations, and the guestspeaker, Miss E. Andrews, after which Mrs Shearman gave pleasure with two recitations. In commencing her talk, Miss Andrew said she had been travelling in the South Island and had spoken to over 30 technical schools and colleges, and had always met with a warm welcome from the principals, and a very attentive hearing from the pupils. In each case she had spoken of the effect of alcohol ori the human body and felt she had given information which would be uesful to them in their after lives. Her subject for the afternoon was “The Social Scourge.” This concerned, she said, not only those affected by it, but the whole population. It had been thought that a check on the trouble would be to give the police power to arrest suspected women. For far too many years a double standard of morality had been tolerated. Men should be required to live as purely as. women. Miss Andrews went on to criticise various suggested remedies for this social evil and in conclusion quoted Dr. Saleeby, who had said that alcohol weakens self-control and lowers tho power to resist temptation, and that every friend of alcohol marches under the banner of racial ruin. Mrs Shearman expressed thanks to the speaker for her instructive and thoughtprovoking address.
