OUTPUT OF SHIPS
GREATER THAN SINKINGS THE OUTLOOK BRIGHTER CN.Z. Press Association.—Copyright.) (11.10.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 28. Sir Arthur Salter, head of the British shipping mission to the United States, has revealed that during September for the first limo the United Nations were , together turning out ships faster than the year’s rate of sinking. “In future, unless the enemy’s attacks become more successful,” he said, “we will have more ships to transport troops and supplies, but America’s increasing armed strength is outstripping the rate of ship production.” A London message reports that the Daily Express Capetown correspondent says survivors from a torpedoed merchantman described how a destroyer rescued the full complement of 240 of the crew and passengers in eight minutes. Tho merchantman was hit at 3 a.m. and 10 lifeboats were launched in the darkness. The destroyer at first circled dropping depth charges and then nosed among the lifeboats and hoisted everyone aboard. A New York cable says that a cut in war risk rates for Atlantic voyages for the second time within a month confirms that tho new and improved methods of convoying and other protective measures have greatly reduced the number of sinkings. Insurance rates have also been reduced 12 per cent, to New Zealand and Australia via the Panama Canal.
