AN EARLIER CONVOY

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright/.) (Rec. 11.50 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 28. Fifty-six survivors from the convoy sent to Russia in July arrived in Britain to-day. One survivor said that after his vessel sank the attacking submarine surfaced and tho commander said: ‘I am sorry I have to sink your ship.’ He gave us a course to follow to reach land, and food. We were six days in the lifeboat before being picked up. GALLANT SEAMEN.

Tributes to the gallantry of British merchant seamen were paid by the officers of a British destroyer which has just returned from Malta. When the recent Malta convoy was attacked by German aircraft a merchant ship, hit by several bombs, sank immediately. “I cannot speak too highly of the sheer ‘guts’ of the men on that ship; they were singing out encouragement to each other as they swam for their lives or clung to pieces of wreckage,” said an officer of the destroyer. The destroyer altogether saved 45 seamen and those rescued cheered themselves hoarse as the destroyer steamed at full speed to rejoin the convoy.—Official Wireless.
