MORE SHIPS DESTROYED
RUGBY, Sept. 26.
British submarines in the Mediterranean have inflicted further heavy losses on tho enemy sea communications, states an Admiralty communique. Five enemy supply ships have been sunk, two probably sunk and one hit by a torpedo and seriously damaged. One of the vessels sunk and one of those probably sunk were largo ships, while all the others were supply ships of medium tonnage. These recent successes have been achieved by five submarines. A Middle East communique states : "On Friday medium and light bombers successfully attacked enemy landing grounds iii the Sidi Haneish area. Yesterday our fighter-bombers raided enemy transports in the battle area and our long-range fighters shot up the Sidi Barrani-Mersa Matruh Road. Malta fighters engaged enemy ■ fighters north-east of tho island and shot down two. We suffered no losses in these operations." Twenty members of the crews of the American bombers who battered the Italian fleet in the action on Juno 15 have been presented by Air Marshal Tedder and Major-General Brereton, commanding the United States air force in the Middle East, with the first medals won by tho Americans in action in this theatre of war.
Major-Goncral Lumsden, who succeeded Major-General Gott in tho Middle East and was reported wounded earlier this month, has been granted tho active rank of lieuten-ant-general.—Official Wireless.
