Unlighted Cycles.

Thirteen cyclists were fined in the Magistrate's Court to-day for riding unlighted cycles at night. The penalties ranged from £1 with 12s costs to 10s and lis costs. Two persons were also fined for not having red reflectors on their machines. The Railway Restrictions.

The Minister of Supply (Mr Sullivan) said the Awatere was the second steel minesweeper to be launched in' the Dominion. It had been so arranged that the production of six such vessels could proceed simultaneously. All were based on the trawler design and were readily adaptable to peacetime activities.

A Notable Pageant. One of the most notable pageants depicting England's history was shown to thousands of lunch-time spectators on the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral ou Friday, states an Official "Wireless message/ It gave a short dramatic costumed record of English history portrayed through all that is fine in English poetry and music and imbued throughout by the highest conception of patriotism. The music was played by the Brigade of Guards Band and many notable artists took part. The spectacle will be repeated before the raid-damaged cathedrals, beginning at Coventry to-morrow.

Great Strategic Highway. The progress of "Alcan", the great Canadian-Alaskan highway, which will connect with the railway and highway systems of the United States and serve to carry supplies to several important military airfields, has been watched with great interest in Britain, and that. interest has been heightened by the recent statement by Mr Stimson that traffic will start moving over the highway's 1600 miles by December 1 next, several months ahead of schedule. The completion of 1600 miles of road between last March and December 1 will imply progress at an approximate rate of six miles daily.
