Manawatu Evening Standard. MONDAY, SEPT. 28, 1942. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

One of the interesting studies of Nature is the remarkable manner in which the laws of compensation operate. In days of darkness and anxiety it is perhaps difficult to realise that there is, or can be, any compensation for what are, in some respects, irreparable losses, but, as Emerson says, "the compen-. sations of calamity are made apparent to the understanding after long intervals of time." At the close of the Great War in 1918 it was hoped that the lessons learned would be applied to the solution of world problems. Unhappily, the leaders of the nations failed, and the result is the most disastrous war of all time, from the effects of which no one can escape. There is, however, evidence that the law of compensation is already operating, for there has come into beinp; a combination of nations to uphold the cause of freedom against the tyranny of Nazism. It is most unlikely that the United Nations would have reached the present stage of co-operation had there been no war. The acceptance and the application of the Lease-or-Lend system for providing the means to defeat the Axis are an earnest of the sincerity of the freedom loving nations to permit nothing to stand in the way of the prosecution of the war until victory has been won. Never in history has there been such a readiness to make sacrifices without counting the cost, and it is generally accepted that the world cannot return to the old davs of selfish individualism and the evils of nationalism. The war has brought the nations face to face with realities that have been neglected in the days of peace. It has taught the leaders and peoples of the anti-Axis countries that, in order to preserve a satisfactory and peaceful way of Jife, there must be international co-opera-tion based upon principles which are not entirely connected with material things. "Man docs not live by bread alone-" The nations are dependent upon one another for their welfare, and, unless they are prepared to join in a sustained, co-operative movement, they will have to face great upheavals from time to time. The lessons of the war are being gained at cruel cost. They will be applied successfully if the United Nations carry into the years of peace the effective methods they have found necessary in the titanic task of defeating the Axis. If the nations continue the unity shown at present—and there is every reason to think that they will — the world can be rebuilt upon a system that will ensure peace for generations to come.. The new relati «nship into which the British, . American. Russian, Chinese, and other peoples have been brought by their leaders is one of Ihe compensations arising from the commOn danger. It is honed that out of the present evil will come the sound and lasting foundation for the ne,w world order, in which] the principles defended at so terrible a sacrifice will be - the guiding light.
