BENGHAZI LAND RAID
(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27. According to the Rome radio, the British used 60 jeeps and 20. three-ton lorries in their recent raid on Benghazi, planning to take positions in the harbour and then signal to submarines lying off-shore ready to land commandos. The raids against Tob•ruk, Barcc, and Benghazi were designed to destroy the Axis land, sea, and air organisation in the rear of Rommel's linos, says the radio. The Official Wireless says that no planes were lost, despite intense anti-aircraft fire, when the Allied forces on Saturday night again attacked enemy landing grounds in the Western Desert, also shipping inside and outside Tobruk. A column of black smoke was seen to rise after the attack on shipping outside, the harbour, while there was one violent explosion. Many fires resulted from the attacks on an aerodrome in the Sidi Hameish area. An enemy camp ten miles west of Tobruk was also raided.
An Egyptian communique reports an air raid last night over Cairo. There were no casualties or damage to property. (A German communique mentions a raid last night at "the airfield of Hcliopolis. near Cairo.")
