HOME GUARD SERVICE

(P.A.) ASHBURTON, Sept. 26. After a conference with Brigadier ItOwling, officer commanding the Southern Military Area, and other officers regarding Homo Guard conditions, the A si] burton County Council decided to suggest to the Minister of Defence that members of the Home Guard of more than 50 years of age bo relieved of their weekly guard duties so that their time could bo devoted to primary production. It was decided to emphasise that other workers are exempt from Home Guard duties. The council felt farm workers were entitled to at least ecpial consideration, as no man could be expected to last long on a seven-day week. Other industries, mostly on the 40-hour week, had a day of rest, but the farm worker had none.
