PANAMA CANAL DEFENCES

(12.35.) Balboa (Canal Zone), Sept. 25 The Secretary of tbe Navy (Colonel Knox) has arrived at tlie Colosolo naval base for an inspection of tlie Canal Zone’s naval installations. Colonel Knox said that the defence against air attack here is as perfect as anywhere in the world, and lie paid a tribute to tbe army and navy co-operation in tbe defence. He praised especially tlie co-operation of tbe Governments of Panama, Central and South America, and said that apparently everybody appreciated the gravity of the situation on this active war front, as this was a potential danger spot, which duplicated the conditions in the SouthWestern Pacific.'
