A TASK FORCE
MEANING AND PURPOSE.
Task Force is an American term applied to a military or naval formation made up to iierform a specific operation, but more often refers to sea than to land forces. Land forces more often use the term combat team. The destroyers assigned to guard a convoy to England are a task force. The unit would still he a task force if a small aeroplane carrier were added to help beat enemy air forces, a pair of cruisers to handle any light surface raiders, and a battleship to check off heavy vessels. A task force may bo made up of nnv vessels that will suit its mission, the essential elements being that it has one specific job to perform and that the ships are dispersed to other missions when this task has been fulfill. . Tf the mission is offensive the unit is often called a’ striking force. But stricter naval terminology would limit this term to a unit composed of fi plane carrier and two or three heavy cruisers or fast battleships on a surprise raid.
