LONDON, Sept. 24. Aiming to make post-war reconciliation impossible, the Germans bad stirred up Lithuanians to massacre Poles and led Hungarians and Bulgarians against Serbs and Croats, says the diplomatic correspondent of the Times. The Germans arc using the Lithuanians as tools to exterminate the Polos in the Vilna Province. They fix quotas for forced labour in Germany and leave the selection to Lithuanians, who naturally choose mostly Poles. When three German officials were ambushed and killed, German and Lithuanian troops made a joint punitive raid on a district, in which 400 Poles were killed.
The Gestapo ordered the Lithuanian police to round up 1000 Poles from a radius of 30 miles. Most of them were shot.
An Ankara message says travellers report that battles between the forces of tlio Yugoslav General Mikhailovitch and German Croat troops resulted in tile Belgrade-Zagreb railway being out of action since August 19. The alternative long detour through Hungary must now be taken. Large-scale fighting is occurring over an extensive area.
Tile German radio says the Paris police arrested 4000 Joavs and searched all their dwellings. The Jews were transported from Paris and allowed to take some clothing and enough food for tAVO days.
LAVAL’S LABOUR DECREE. The Vichy News Agency says that neAV regulations have been put into execution for the compulsory -labour decree issued on September 14. Tho regulations state that “all men whose age, skill, or family duties ulloav them to he sent to Germany Avill receive a private request to go in order to co-operate with the French nation’s moral task—to release French Avalprisoners,” Unemployment cards may be withdrawn from those refusing Avork in France to replace a worker sent to Germany. Families of men “volunteering” for Avork in Germany Avill i-eceive half the Avages they are noAV getting in addition to the Avages paid in Gerinaiiy.
