VIOLENT NAZI EFFORTS

BATTLE FOR CITY STREET BERLIN CHANGES ITS TUNE LONDON, Sept. 25. In the battle for Stalingrad the Germans are making violent efforts to gain possession of a great street that runs across the city from the west to the Volga.

Massed German tanks are being used and the battle is one of tbe fiercest. So far tlie Russians, who are well dug in, have held off all the attacks, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy.

In the north-west the Germans are Counter-attacking. The Berlin radio How says it is not important that Stalingrad should he taken quickly and the fighting in the Caucasus is the more important. The latest report from Moscow says that the Germans arc incessantly 6hclling Stalingrad. The Moscow midnight communique reports that the Soviet forces have captured an important position somewhere on this portion of the front. The German thrusts at Mozdok have not resulted in their being brought any nearer the Grozny oilfields and in the Western Caucasus the enemy has not made any further progress towards the seaport of Tuapse. At Sinyavino the Germans have driven a wedge into the "Russian lines at tremendous cost. The Russians counter-attacked and the German advance has been checked.
