Miss E. M. Lewis, formerly matronsuperintendent of tho Marlborough hospitals, has been appointed matron of a hospital ship. According to a London cable, the death has occurred of Miss Bertha F. Haines, aged 94. She was the last survivor of a family of 22 of whom she was the 20th. She had 140 nephews and nieces living in England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and India. Her oldest niece was 93 and the youngest great-great-great-niece was aged 12 months.

At the meeting of St. Paul’s Guild on Thursday Mrs W. B. Cameron presided. The duty roster for the patriotic shop was drawn up for early in October and final arrangements made for a social afternoon. A report on parcels sent to boys overseas beloiminn- to the church was road by Mrs J. H. Hancock. It was decided to hold the annual flower show and fair in the middle of November. The tea hostesses were Mcsdamcs Green, Miller, and Gilling. Tho jolly spirit which prevails at the weekly informal dances for men of the Forces at the National Club continues to draw largo attendances and last evening’s function went with a swing from beginning to end. Ihe Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss J. Findlay and Second-Lieutenant It. Tapner, and the music was supplied by Miss B. Algie, extras being played by Sergeant H. L. Pither. ’the hostesses were Mesdames 11. G- Mills and J. G. Grimshaw and Miss B. rarrahor, and the duties of M.C. weie carried out by Mr Mills, assisted by Mr Grimshaw. It was announced at the monthly meeting of St. Andrew’s Ladies’ Social Guild, at which Mrs M. Aitcliison presided, that 40 parcels had been packed for soldier sons of niemhors and more would be packed by the end of the month. Mesdames Williamson and G’road were appointed representatives to attend a meeting arran god by the Palmerston North W 7 C T U. Rev. C. B. Boggis, who spoke on “The Treasures of Darkness, ’ gave a message of comfort to all who arc sulfering in the stress and strain o[ the war. Permanent enrichment, lie said, could be found in God’s promise, 1 will give thee the treasures of darkness. Mr Bougie quoted the occasion of St. .Paul s opportunity in the prison of witnessing to God and the vision of the celestial city which had come to John Banyan when be was in Bodlord gaol and ho had been inspired to write “Pilgrim S 11°gress.” Evidence of the same divine comfort in the present day came in the message of Pastor Nicmollcr from a concentration camp in Germany, “Be of good cheer ” Out of their tribulation these rnen had found the things that were abiding. Out of the darkness of Calvary had coine the greatest treasure and. our Lord bad won eternal salvation, which all ll co ' l , share. At tlio conclusion of his talk Mr Bog"is was thanked by Mrs Aitcliison, and Rev. J. Hubbard added his appreciation of the presence of Mr Boggis. who, lie said, had shown himself a friendly, co-operative spirit in church .work. Mrs Sorenson, on behalf of the visitors, added her thanks. A feature of the meeting was the artistic arrangement of tho flowers, the work of Mrs J. Galland.
