TRIALS IN HEAVY GOING. (By "Spectator.")
I The horses with engagement sat the ' Foxton Club's meeting were given their final preparatory gallops at Awapuni this morning. The track was particularly heavy and the poles on the course proper a long way out. Stoady rain fell throughout the proceedings and the times registered proved of little value, none of the horses being allowed to do their best in the going. Don Quox (Bowry) and Sceptre (S. Waddell) were sent over a mile, the former pleasing by the way he handled tho going. Theolateral (Midwood) was showing out from War Credit (S. Waddell) and Augment (Sellars) at tho end of five furlongs. Courting (Bowncss) slipped over half a mile and Star Zone (S. Waddell) infused plenty of dash into a three-furlong effort. Henry of Huntingdon (A. Waddell) finished on solidly to head off Sea Quex (S. Waddell) and Kinsman (Midwood) when they ran seven furlongs in even time. Solver (Bowry) and Donegal Bay (Ewan) were paired over five furlongs, and Stairway (A. Waddell) and Rink (S. Waddell) followed over six. Over tho hurdles, Vitcmont (Anderson) jumped three obstacles carefully, and Colossal Chief (W. J. McDowall) and Circular Note (Miss F. White) went well in a similar task.
Some ridirig engagements are: —A. Midwood. Sea Quex, Rama Iti, War Credit; V. Sellars, Madam Rachel, Pedantic, Augment; J." Garth, Tetratina; C. A. Bowry, Nighean. Miss Portland j N.
