AIRCRAFT-CARRIER LOST

'(Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 12. The Admiralty announces that the aircraft-carrier Eagle has been sunk as the result of a U-boat attack in the Mediterranean. At least one Üboat operating in the same area as the Eagle has already, been sunk. There were 930 survivors of the Eagle's complement, including Captain L. Mackintosh, 67 Officers, and 862 other ratings.—Official Wireless.

Of 22,600 tons, the Eagle was laid down in 1914 as the Chilean battleship Almirante Cochrane, but was purchased in 1917, while still on the stocks, by the British Government and commissioned as a carrier in 1924. She was refitted in 1932. She carried about ,21 planes.
