TIMARU'S MAYORALTY.

(Press Assn.) TIMARU, July 28. The Timaru Borough Council has declined by four votes to three to grant a further extension of leave to the Mayor (Major W. G. Tweedy), who is serving as Red Cross Commissioner for New Zealand overseas. This means a mayoral election. When Major Tweedy left Timaru he applied for leavo for the remainder of his term, the council granting six months. Mr P. B. Foote (deputyMayor) became acting-Mayor, Mrs Tweedy continuing as "Mayoress. The six months' period expired some time ago and Major Tweedy has now been absent without leave for three meetings. After the next meeting he forfeits his seat. Mr Foote took no part in the debate, but after the council meeting he announced his intention of contesting the mayoralty.
