DIRECT GIVING.
Adopting a policy of direct giving for the 1942 Patriotic Appeal, for which a sum of £17,2U0 is required from the city and Kairanga County, the committee responsible for its direction can be congratulated on the success achieved so far. To-day and tomorrow business firms _ in the Square and its environs are being canvassed by collectors,
and on Thursday evening there i will be a household canvass to| receive donations in response to the cards sent to every householder. Though it is only a fewdays since the appeal was inaugurated more than £7500 has been either received or promiised, a most gratifying result which gives promise of a splendid success when the householders' canvass is concluded. The money is required to provide comforts for the Fighting Forces, for the sick and wounded, and parcels for the distressingly large number of prisoners of war, whose total has been increased rather largely by the latest fighting in Egypt. It is to be the only local Patriotic Appeal this year, and the fact has been emphasised on , more than one occasion that Dominion control of the money is vested in responsible citizens who have fulfilled, and continue to fulfill, their duties to the entire satisfaction of the country. The policy of direct giving is lo be highly commended. While some towns have cbosen other methods, and money has been readily forthcoming, the people of this city have the opportunity to show the country what can be achieved in a few days by giving spontaneously. The results so far achieved are an augury that this opportunity is not being lost.
