EAST COAST RAILWAY
(Special) WELLINGTON. July 28. Although the construction of the new lino between Wairoa and Gisborne has not yet reached the stage where it can bo taken over by the Railway Department, arrangements have been made with the Public Works Department to enable the unopened line to be made available from August 3 for the conveyance of goods traffic. This announcement from the Minister of Railways (Mr Semple) was made to-day. In order to obviate interference with the completion of the work, it will be necessary to confine trains to night running and in consequence it will be possible to provide initially only a limited service. "By November," the Minister's statement added, "it is anticipated that the line will bo ready for passenger traffic and a suitable timetable arranged to meet the requirements of the areas served by this railway; also to give ah adequate connection with the express services to and from Napier and Palmerston North."
