SANK ENEMY SUBMARINE

(9.5 a.m.) CAPETOWN, April 19. ' \ small merchantman from Australia arrived in Table Bay flying the signal: "We have sunk an enemy siihuiarinc." The crew reported that shots were exchanged. The merchantman's fourth shot reached the target, causing an upheaval ol water and smoke. When the smoke cleared there was no sign of the submarine, but half an hour later a heavy underwater explosion was heard. Ihe crew believe the last shot caused a fire in the submarine's magazine, as a result of which the submarine exploded.
