TOTAL MOUNTING

BOMBER BONDS DISTRICT FIGURE £2S,OS7 The wave of enthusiasm which has swept over the Dominion in the "Bonds for Bombers Campaign" continues unabated and the total reached last night was £825,516. It was hoped to reach the £1;000,000 mark to-day. So far as Palmerston North is concerned, the district organiser (Mr A. C. F. Charles) stated to-day that he and his committee felt particularly pleased at the effort which this city and the district are making. Tuesday and Wednesday had been good days and, although it was thought there might have been a slight drop yesterday, this did not prove to be the case. The total reached (£7249) was the highest for the week. By mid-day today, the day's sales were £2464. Of this amount £IOOO had been re- v ceived before 10.30 a.m. The country areas were giving the scheme every support and yesterdav their total was £12,939.

The figures for Palmerston North and district at noon to-day were £25,057.

Following the opening of the selling depots in the city and the street stall staffed by members of the W.W.&.A. there'was a substantial increase in the sales. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday sales at the street stalj alone reached "£2OOO. The icature of the campaign to date, added Mr Charles, was that, while Palmerston North had more than held its own with the other districts, this had been achieved through the effort? of the small investors; the response by the people had been wonuen uu ( > good. It was well within the capabilities of the. city, and in line, with the usual ready response to appeals such as this, that the total should reach £30.000 by midday to-morrow and no doubt those who were prepared to make the present day sacrifice for future security would see that the R.N.Z.A.F. secured all possible support. Included in the purchases in Palmerston North yesterday was one of £IBOO for the Wellington Harbour Board, which has purchased £IO,OOO worth' of bonds in all, £.5000 being invested in Wellington and the remainder being divided among the three districts having representation on the board.

The week's totals so far for the various districts as announced last night, with yesterday's figures in parentheses, are: Wellington (£52,945),' £106,689; x\apier (£18.368), £56,362; Wunganui (£17,640), £40,166; New Plymouth (£15,128), £32,117; Palmerston North (£20,188), £54,499; Gisborne (£5962), £15.481; Nelson £4607), £15,071; Blenheim (£5431), £15.6*5; Auckland (£73.320), £207,b2t; Christchurch Dunedin (£11,227). £28,460; Greymouth (£15,14.1),, £26,591; Hamilton (£29,786), ' £59,864; Invercargill (£8549), £24,961; Oamaru (£1737), £4084); Thames (£7000). £21,570.: Timaru (£8865), £20,770; Westport (£1603). £3847.
