NO LONGER CONFIDENT
NAZIS LOSING HOPE. (United Press Association—Copvright.) (Rec. 1.30) NEW YORK, March 26. "Information has reached the State Department from a secret source in Germany that the German people no longer expect victory," said the Assistant (Secretary of State, who added:—
] "Our information proves that the I Germans know they have lost .the war i unless a miraculous victory is possible for Germany in 1942. The Nazis have Jiot made any provisions for 1943. They no longer repair wornout machines and tools. Furthermore they are sending skilled workers and engineers to the front. Altogether they are entirely concentrating their efforts for the moment, while they have abandoned any hope for to-morrow." A London cable says: With the thaw
beginning on the Russian front, Germany, it is expected, will soon take the offensive. Germany has everything to gain and everything to lose and will face the issue in a gambler's spirit. Every resource is likely to be thrown in, regardless of the cost. The Russians, however, despite the huge cost of the offensive since early in Decernber, are better off in every way lor a German offensive than they were last June. The Yorkshire Post's military writer says that the Russians believe Hitler's now army will not stand the strain of fighting as well as the first Nazi army. It is suggested that August may see the end of the German army, adds the correspondent. Messages from Stockholm report that
the Russians are launching mass infantry attacks on the Donetz front and as a result of actions in the ]ast fortnight on the Leningrad front 17 000 Germans have been captured. Moscow reports that 56 German > bombers raided Murmansk on Wednesday. Eleven were destroyed.
