U.S. NAVAL SUCCESSES

A United States Navy communique from the Ear East states that United States submarines operating in Japanese waters recently sank a 7000-ton tanker, a 6000-ton ship, a 5000-ton freighter and also damaged two 2000ton freighters, in addition to an enemy destroyer or anti-submarine vessel aitackcd and probably sunk. The Attorney-General (Mr Biddle) has ordered a nation-wide round up of 8000 alien seamen who have deserted their ships, thereby hampering the shipment of war supplies to the Allies. The round-up has been undertaken because of the serious situation that lias arisen in obtaining men needed for crews. The total of 8000 sailors illegally in the United States about 3000 arc Norwegians. 3000 Greeks, * ml the remainder mostly Danes. Swedes, Dutch and British.
