L.A.C. W. Hurdle was farewelled yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (Mr T. L. Seddon) and Mr F. J. Allen (R.S.A.), when the usual presentation was made. The recipient is a son of Mr and Mrs Walter Hurdle, of Church Street.
Over £GOO was invested by the public in bonds yesterday and the Post Office now has in hand over £IOOO towards the “Bonds for Bombers” campaign.
At a meeting of the Athletic and Cycling Club it was decided to purchase £ls worth of bonds for bombers. The chairman (Air A. Hendry) referred to the successful season the club bad enjoyed and stated that it was in a financial position to make the purchase and further assist the war effort. It was announced that Miss J. McNab had won the Cobbe Cup for the season’s points in the women's events. The club is to go into recess for a period and Mr Hendry thanked the committee and officials for their co-operation during the year’s activities.
In the Supreme Court at Wellington, yesterday, James Tekotahitanga liallett, a labourer, aged IS-i years, was admitted to probation for two years 'on charges of forgery and theft at Tedding, on the special condition? that he remain in the employment of his father till called up for military service, and that he pay £2 Is 2d within six months. His Honour (Mr Justice Smith) told accused’s father, who gave evidence that the probation officer gave him and his family a good character. Restitution had been made in full.
With the restriction now placed on the use of cement except for defence works the Borough Council’s soak well scheme at the intake may be affected, as some three thus of cement are required to complete the second well, fortunately, the work is well advanced with one well completed, while the other is down to a good depth. The contractor is hopeful mat the balance of material needed will be forthcoming. airs D. Raynor and Miss E. Raynor were hostesses at a gift evening last night, in honour of Miss Q. Allen and L.A.C. M. R. Knight whose marriage is to take place shortly. The function was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall and about 50 guests were present, the evening being spent in dancing, etc. It is learned that various women’s organisations in the district have plans in hand for functions to he held in aid of the All Purposes Patriotic Appeal now launched.
At a meeting of the medical section of the E.P.S. this week Mrs W. J . Borrie was appointed officer in charge of the emergency hospital and dressing stations, Mrs Low (first aid posts), deputy Miss E. Verrv; Miss Crabb (first aid cars), Mr Dewar (clerical staff) and Mr C. Hausmann (ambulance and orderlies).
During the summer months children at Manchester Street School cultivated an empty section in Grey Street and planted it in yegetables. The fruits of their la bo nr are now becoming apparent. Neat rows of winter cabbages and other vegetables are to bo seen and good growth is being made.
