STRONG SUPPORT

AUSTRALIA’S PLEA. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 25. When the House of Commons meets on Tuesday many members are expected to give strong support to tlie claims oi Australia tor a greater say m the conduct of the war. The Sunday Times diplomatic correspondent says it is probable shat Mr Churchill will invite Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa to enter the Imperial War Cabinet. However, Mr Curtin's request for the formation of a Pacific War Council, on which all countries concerned in the Pacific struggle would be represented, involves a different set of problems—lor instance the relationship of such a body to the Allied Commander-in-Chief (General Wavell). The correspondent adds that it is doubtiul whether the other Governments affected desire such a council. The British Press is leading public opinion in support of Australia’s ease. The newspapers and weeklies, with few exceptions, express their realisation of the danger not only to Australia and New Zealand, but also the Empire. The War Cabinet will be one of the three main issues in the House ot Commons war debate. Mr Curtin s forthright demand, as some papers Call it. is regarded as strengthening the critics’ hands. In Washington Mr Casey handed President Roosevelt important suggestions From Air Curtin regarding the defence of Australia. Air Casey said alter the interview that he felt reassured to the extent that the President appreciated the situation and had a wide knowledge of the position. AIR CHURCHILL’S PROMISE. LONDON, Jan. 25. Mr Churchill is reported to have advised the Australian Government that its overtures arising out of the more critical situation in the 1 acihc will receive the careful consideration of the Government.
