PRICE OF POTATOES.
GROVERS OBJECT TO MAXIMUM PUKEKOHE, Jan. 19.
On behalf of potato growers at Pukekohe, a letter has gone forward to the Price Tribunal to-day asking that no maximum price for new potatoes dug in the months of September, October and November be imposed. This is the outcome of a meeting of 1 growers at which the action of the j State in imposing a maximum price of I £2O a ton to growers was discussed, j Beforehand, individual growers had |pointed out that the State’s action in | fixing a maximum price, just before Christmas, had meant to the few growers here who had been digging since at a loss of about £ll a ton on what they could have expected from an open market. Also, the State had bought Pukekohe potatoes during the glut the previous season for the Army at £2 19s fid a ton, which was well l>clow production costs, and therefore its action in imposing a ceiling price in the following season, when there was. a shortage and growers were recouping losses made the previous season, seemed rather unfair. However, ho direction was given by the meeting to pursue these aspects of the matter.
