CAUSE OF FREEDOM
EMPIRE CRUSADE, (United Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 12.35 p.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 1. In his address to the Empire Pageant at the Albert Hall, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Lang) said: "In all these centuries this old citadel of freedom has stood inviolate and, please God, will still remain inviolate. Because freedom is the very breath of life, we intend to win freedom for ourselves and others. ''There is a great beacon shining through the clouds of destiny—Russia, who is.fighting as one man, not for any system or party, but for the cause of freedom and for the soil which her people so passionately love. '"There is now another great beacon of hope flashing across the Atlantic — the United States, which has been a long time waking from her fitful dream of security, but has now drawn the sword and to-day is with us in prayer. We cherish no deeper feeling than that our generation may be privileged to restore to the enslaved countries their freedom. "With the Allies we now become a real community in which one suffers with all and rejoices with all. In that spirit we must keep together for the future of the security of the world. The nations must keep together in their vast task of rebuilding the world,"
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster (Dr. Hinsley), who stood side by side with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Moderator of the Free Church Union, and Archbishop Germanos of Greece, said they were united in one grand cause—the defence of mankind against the powers of evil which sought to dominate all nations and peoples by the sheer weight of brute force. "All men of goodwill, even those who do not share this hour of faith, must surely agree there can never be stability or order in civilised life, nor peace, prosperity, and security unless men of every race, class, and colour are treated as human beings, find entitled to live without an everlasting threat of enslavement. All men of goodwill must admit that the new order of the world, as President Roosevelt has trenchantly declared, can and must be built only on the basis of our freedom—freedom from want, from fear, of worship, and ot speech. These liberties should be practically recognised and wisely enforced unless tyranny is allowed to be a. ceaseless menace to human society, and its final ruin." Admiral Sir Edward Evans said: "The whole spirit of the pageant is a sacred and memorable occasion, with that righteous. God-fearing atmosphere which is exactly what Hitler, Mussolini and Togo would like to destroy. Their aim is to substitute sacrilege, murder, brutality, and torture for the decency, happiness, freedom, and fair dealing with which we would start the New Year."
The Union Jack and Stars and Stripes are flying on. the same flagstaff over the north-west of Westminster Abbev to-day, which is a National Dav of Prayes in Britain ajid the United States.—Official Wireless.
