REPERTORY PLAYS

SECONDARY SCHOOLS GROUP

An entertaining programme of plays was presented in the Empire Hall, last evening, when talent in a good degree was revealed by the secondary schools group of the Manawatu .Repertory Society. The plays chosen were well varied and gave line scope for the enthusiasm of the young perlormers. Jn the absence of the president (Mr M. H. Oram), Miss K. Woodhouse thanked the producers, the players, Messrs Craven and I*. Moore (stage managers), C. Cronin (house manager), tin; make-up team, the orchestra and all who had assisted towards the success of the programme. Tlio first presentation was a jnu'iod play, the action taking place in the interior ot an old attic. Mrs C. Craven was producer and those taking part were Margaret Ucdingliold, David Dale, Maurice Guthrie, Monica Belgruve, Colin Watson, Robert Burns, Shirley King, Norman Allen, Ngairo Fogden, Margaret Watchorn, Douglas Hope, Gloria Davidson, Mavis White, Pai Lyons, and Kathleen Murphy, 'there was opportunity for nice vocal worlc by Gloria Davidson and Douglas Hope, their duet being repeated at the close of the programme by special request. A very good comedy followed, the scene being set in a common-room in a girls' school, in which the story was well given by Eleanor Bennett, Jose Hart, Rat (Jodie, Patricia Butler, Ruth Fraser, Betty Cherrie, Mamie Stanford, Pauline Mackin, Beverley West, and Jocelyn Shann. The producer was Miss Maynie Reid. Four proposals through the ages were presented in a series of tableaux arranged by Mrs J. Davidson, those taking part being Gloria Davidson, and Douglas Hope, Kathleen Murphy, Norma Allen, Margaret McAlister, Jack Mummery, Pat Lyons, and B. Pegden, with introductory remarks by Juliette Dean and music by C. Small. In the only thriller of the evening the producer was Keith Thomson, a junior member, whoso work shows great promise, the players being Zane Bartlett, Gordon Lee, William Pringlc, and Peter Stichbury. The final play was set in a corn-lie!d, being a pretty little story concerning a scarecrow and a spell which provided opportunity for picturesque grouping and vocal interludes from a band of gipsies. The players were Jack Mummery, Valda McPhail. Olga Shaw, Solwyn Parton, Barry Cousins, William Pringlc, Diana Joblin, Malcolm Asliwell, Zane Bartlett, Margaret MacAlistor, Douglas- Hope, Juliette Dean, Jocelyn Duff Kathleen Tristram, Margaret Bedingficld, lat Lvons Maisic Boswell, Jocelyn Hodges, Kathleen Murphy. Mrs J Davidson was the producer and C. Small was at the piano. Excellent incidental music was provided by the Boys' High School orchestra.
