The Education Board intimated that provision of a new gas cooking stove for the secondary department had been approved. The headmaster's report stated flm roll numhor ilimnrr .lnlv was 250

in the primary department and 32 in the secondary. The attendance had been seriously affected by an epidemic of mumps. There were no staff changes. Mid-year examinations had been held, and the school had been visited by Mr P. G. Lewis, ALA., inspector. The bad condition of one of the supply tanks connected with the heating system had been referred to the hoard. Inter-school basketball and football matches had been played with Dannevirke South School, Pahiatua District High School and the Dannevirke Convent School. Teams took part in trials for the selection of Southern Hawke’s Bay representatives, and five hoys and five girls took part in Possibles v. Probables matches. Three girls had been selected as a basketball representatives, and two boys were being considered in the final selection of the football representatives. On August 9, six hoys will be playing in a Possibles v. Probables match at Woodvillc. The secondary department had played inter-school matches with Palmerston North Technical School and the Alarist and Convent High Schools, Palmerston North. An invitation had been received for teams to visit the Dannevirke High School. The transport of children for school matches had given the headmaster some concern, and he would appreciate a little financial assistance towards the cost, particularly for trial matches for representative players. A team from the secondary department is to take part in a play festival which is being organised by the Little Theatre Society, Palmerston North. A reception was accorded by the school to Captain Alules, N.Z.AI.C., of the Alaori Battalion, who was recently invalided home; Captain AJtiles was dux of the school in 1923. The school had been invited by the Automobile Association to attend a screening of “safety first” films. The secretary having reported that the funds were desperately low, it was decided that a financial statement be submitted to the board through Air 11. S. Al. Quigley. The chairman stated that he would put the position before the board when lie visited Napier during the month. Commenting upon matters mentioned in the headmaster’s report, the chairman referred to the fact that the successes of the basketball teams had attracted attention. The footballers, too, were doing very well. Extending the report on the reception given by the school and the committee to Captain Alules, the chairman commended the arrangements made by Air Henderson, and stated that the enjoyable function would be a pleasant memory for the children. The committee decided to give the financial assistance required in the matter of transport of players attending trial games. The forthcoming school concert was discussed and several appointments con- j nected with tho management were made. The planting of gift coniferous trees and the shrubs ordered by the committee was discussed, and the removal of several wattle trees was decided upon.
