UNUSUAL PROSECUTION.

(Press Assn.) DUNEDIN. Julv 31. An unusual ease of alleged technical desertion was heard in the Police Court when two foreign seamen. Rare Lavold, aged 27. engineer, and Signnmn Petterson. aged 28. third officer, pleaded not guilty to deserting a ship at Lyttelton. The police stated the men had taken liquor and failed to return before the ship sailed. The Customs regulations compelled the captain to take out warrants. The master gave evidence that lie did not; think for one moment the men were deserters; he was compelled agair.ts his wishes to take out warrants. Defendants were remanded till Saturday, the captain undertaking to meet expenses.
