EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AUGUST 1, 1911.
As a result of the revolt in Albania it was reported that there were 25.000 persons starving through the wheat crops not being sown. Large numbers of cattle and sheep had died from foot and mouth disease.
Damage estimated at over £5.000.000 had been caused at Stamboul as the result of a great conflagration. It was caused by escaped prisoners who set fire to a number of buildings. Many hundreds of persons had been killed.
Serious strikes had again broken out in England. At Tilbury, all except the Port of London Authority employees, were idle. The men numbered' 10.000. At Manchester 9000 men had struck for higher wages.
