NEW AMERICAN SHIPS. DELIVERING THE GOODS. LONDON, July 18. Mr Harry Hopkins, President Roosevelt’s personal representative, who is visiting England, revealed to-day that the United States has launched the greatest merchant ship-building programme ever undertaken by any country. My Hopkins declared America was “going to build enough ships to bring her products to Britain and elsewhere in the war theatre.” He said 1,000,000 tons would be built this year. 0,000,000 tons next year, and “substantially more” in ensuing years. Great new factories wore turning out bombers to attack Germany. “We are convinced that together Britain and America can build more planes than Germany—and better ones,” lie added. Alluding to the delivery of supplies, Sir Hopkins remarked: “The President has said our goods are going to arrive. Wo are going to protect the ships carrying them, but I am not going to discuss details.” Mr Hopkins is to discuss all aspects of the problem of supplies to Britain and the Middle East.

U.S. PLAYS HER PART. (Roe. 9.15 ia.m.) LONDON, July 18. “To all those throughout the world who are wondering what will be the outcome 1 say this war cannot be lost,” declared Mr Harry Hopkins in an interview with British journalists at the American Embassy. “America’s production is increasing every month, will continue to increase, and will be far more extensive than anybody realises. The whole productive effort of Britain and America must be directed to providing munitions sufficient to overwhelm dictatorship. We have got to whip this fellow.

“l am convinced the British Empire, the United States, and th© other countries which are still free can make j larger quantities of mechanised cquipi merit than Germany. I have come to discuss the whole problem of supplies . for tho United Kingdom and the Midj dlo East; that includes anything you : can mention, including munitions, food, and shipping requirements. . .
