SOLDIERS’ SAFETY.

ADVICE TO RELATIVES. (Press Assn) WELLINGTON, July 14. j Advice received by the Minister of Defence indicates tho advisability of treating with reserve information as - to their safety sent privately by racm- | bers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force to relatives in New Zealand. In some instances after the fighting in Greece there was a conflict between the information sent officially to next-of-kin and that in private cablegrams. Inquiries have been made and the following reply has been received from Army Headquarters, Cairo: i “Private cables reporting safety I were originated in Greece, but due to 'a breakdown of communications were not despatched until after the operations in Greece. These were then despatched without reference to this office, which could have supplied information regarding subsequent casi unities to the personnel concerned.” ! Commenting on this report, tho Minister said that, considering the con- 1 ditions in Greece and Crete and the , fact that both places had to be evacuated, the difficulty of quickly compiling accurate - records could be fully appreciated. He assured next-of-kin that every possible step was being taken to secure reliable information at the earliest possible moment. Un--1 til official advice came to hand from overseas next-of-kin would be wise in treating unofficial reports with reserve.
