Prayer at Meetings.
At St. Andrew’s Church, yesterday, Rev. J. Hubbard declared that it was heartening to see local bodies opening their meetings with prayer. “It is a realisation that there is a Power above and beyond us and that the victory of , <r nation remains with Him Who is Father of us all,” said Mr Hubbard. Four Motor-Cars Taken. No fewer than four motor-cars were removed from Palmerston North without authority on Saturday night. One was recovered at Danncvirke near the military camp, a second at Ohakea near the aerodrome, and a third in Merc Mere Avenue. Palmerston North, with both front wheels and the spare wheel missing. The fourth car has not yet been traced.
For Unbiassed Judgment. When the Grand Jury was called at the opening of the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court in Palmerston North, to-day, one juror stood aside and the matter of former business associations lie had had with one of the accused persons was brought to the notice of the presiding Judge, lit. The sterling exchange funds of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand last Monday stood at £10.(561 .tf)D, a decrease for the-week of £.305.502. The bank’s net overseas assets at £19.6-19,678 have decreased by £304,503. The note issue totalled £21,671,609, a docroaso of £171,478. Advances to the State Marketing Department at £5.525,303 have increased by £259.688, while advances to the State for other purposes remain unchanged at £13,500,000. Exemptions For Jurors.
Four persons were exempted from service o.u the common jury when the quarterly sessions of the Supreme Court opened in Palmerston North today. One was a farmer conducting one farm and supervising another and whose operations were affected by the draw-ofT of man-power to the war; the second was a baker’s roundsman; the third the operator of a one-man butcher’s shop; and the fourth a restaurateur who did necessary cooking. Woman’s Good Example.
“Your sister is to he commended; her action is a lesson to others.” said Mr C. Orr Walker, S.M.. chairman of the Armed Forces Appeal Board, to Maxwell Haultain Newton, dairy farmer, after Newton had told the board that his sister was to carry on appellant’s farm. Newton asked that ho he not called for service until November 1 to enable him to get everything in order for his sister to carry on the farm, on which 33 cows were being milked, lie said that his two brothers were overseas and he wanted to join them. The postponement was granted. Governor Gives First Aid.
The impression of the Governor-Gen-eral, Sir Cyril Newall, as a man of ! action was heightened by an incident I during the civic reception in his honour held at Blenheim. The applicant said that staffing trouble had been made acute by minor illnesses in t lie i staff which had already been depleted I in enlistments for the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The juror was excused Ifrom service.
