AERIAL PATROLS.

MEDITERRANEA X TH EATR E. (Rec. 12.00 p.m.) RUGBY, June 1. An R.A.F. Middle East communique; states that R.A.J'', fighters maintained defensive patrols over Uis Majesty's sliip.s in the Mediterranean throughout Saturday. In the course of these patrols they destroyed five Junkers 8S bombers, one S7'J. and one Cant 107 bomber, and damaged other Junkers SS's so severely that a number of them are unlikely to have regained their bases. in Crete the aerodromes at Malemi and Heraclion were again heavily bombed during the night of May 30-31. Three enemy aircraft were set on fire at Malemi, and at Heraclion a number of fires accompanied by heavy explosions were started near the runways and among aerodrome buildings. Six grounded Junkers 83 planes were ma-chine-gunned and damaged. "In Iraq on Saturday concentrated heavy bombing attacks in close support of our troops were made on VVashash Ra.shid and enemy positions at Kadhimain. While full details are not yet available, it is known that these attacks were highly.successful. "in the Eastern Mediterranean, during patrois bv a large force of our lighters, contact was made with big formations of enemy aircraft. Two Heinkel Ill's were shot down into the sea, one of them by a Free French i pilot, and a considerable number of ! other enemy aircraft were badlv damaged. FURTHER OPERATIONS. (Rec. 1.40 p.m.) RUGBY, Juno 1. In Cyrenuica Beyghazi was attacked By our bombers during the night of -May :JO-31. Bombs were observed bursting on the Cathedral Mole and on the Julian Mole. Bombers of the S.A.A.I', attacked enemy motor transport, tents, and buildings near Chimbi (Abyssinia). Bombs were seen to fall on large buildings and parked motor transport. From all the above operations four of our aircraft are missing.— Official Wireless.
