LICENSING "*S U GG ESTEI). WELLINGTON, May 31. I Enemy aliens were discussed by the! New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association annual conference yesterday. On Air C. O. Bell’s motion it was decided to request the Government that no alien, enemy or otherwise, lxallowed to start in any business or profession without having • first obtained a license from the appropriate Government department concerned; that they advertise their status and intention to apply for such a license; that the department concerned take into account when considering a license whether a New Zealander had had to give up a similar class of business or. profession in the locality to undertake military service. The resolution replaced this remit from Hastings which had boon approved by the committee dealing with detence, subversive propaganda, and aliens: "That this conference views with grave concern the fact that refugee doctors are in practice in this country, and in sonic cases are taking the place of our own subjects who are: on war service, to the certain dctri-l nient of the latter on their return, and calls upon the Government to debar 1 all refugee doctors from private practice.” r Other recommendations* to the Government on the same subject were : "That the R.S.A. expresses concern at the increasing rate of alien admissions to New Zealand (as far as available figures disclose) especially since the outbreak of war. and that the Government be urged to terminate the J entry of enemy aliens forthwith and: to' exercise drastic control over the! admission of all foreigners.” “That this Dominion’Council of the New Zealand R.S.A. is dissatisfied with’ file way the enemy alien problem is being dealt with by the Government, | and urges the Government immediately] to tighten up all regulations .practic-, able to this extremely serious matter;! and further urges that there be absolutely no exemptions from registration! of enemy aliens.
