CHRISTCHURCH LANDSLIDE.
LABOUR LOSES CONTROL. (Press Assn.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 18. Labour was overwhelmingly defeated in the municipal elections at Christchurch. It lost the Mayoralty and control of the City Council, sintered a heavy reduction in its representation on the Christchurch Tramway Board. lost three of its four seats' for the Lyttelton Harbour Board, and won only* three of the ten city scats for the North Canterbury Hospital Board on which previously its representation was six In a small j>ol 1 Air E. H. Andrews (Citizens’ Association Mayoral candidate) had a comfortable lead of 1102 votes from the Labour candidate (Air E. Parlane). Ale J. K. Alolonc.y (Independent) who headed what lie called the “win the war group’’ secured 46 1 2 votes while Air C. I . Rodda (Independent) lost his deposit. The extent of the Labour loss is l>est measured in the City Council where it lias four seats out of sixteen, whereas in the last Council it had ten. The deciding votes at meetings of the Tramway Board may now rest with two. Independent members (Alessrs AV. J. Walter and A. A. McLachlan) as in yesterday’s election the six city seats wore divided equally among Labour and Citizens’ Association candidates. Another Labour member (Sergeant .J. S. Barr) is serving overseas. I members were Labour supporters. Mr H. E. Denton (Labour) the chairman, land Corporal H. M. Mncfarlane (the I retiring .Mayor and deputy chairman) lost their scats. This is the only seat !Mr Maciarlanc contested. Mrs Macfarlane stood unsuccessfully for both the Hospital Board and City Council.
