LABOUR SEVERELY ROUTED. "WELLINGTON'S STERN VOTE. (Press Assn.) WELLINGTON, May 18. tor the Mayoralty of W ellington the Citizens candidate and sitting Mayor (.Ur T. C. A. Hislop) was returned by i a majority of nearly 0000 votes over the Deputy-Speaker of the House of [ Representatives and the Labour candidate (Mr R. AtcKeon, M.P.). This is the biggest majority of Mr Hislop's ten years in otiiee, already a. record m length for the capital city before his re-election lor a lurther three years. ’The voting was: UiiSLUT, T. C. A. (C.) 19,8.31 mckEen, r. (l.) 10,920 Alajority '.. 8,925 In one ol the biggest landslides in the history ol municipal politics in Wellington, the Citizens’ Ticket captured ait litteeu seats on the Cuy (Jouneil and unseated all six sitting Labour councillors. The new members of the Council, all from the Citizens' ticket, are .Mrs Knox Dinner and Messrs 11. J. Jodd, R. H. Niinnio, i<. W. Eurkert, C. M. lfowden, W. H. iStevens, and J. D. Sievrigiit. The deleated councillors' (all Labour) were: Messrs U. McKeen, M.l’. (.who was Labour’s Mayoral candidate), C. H. Chapman, M.P , T. lfrindie, M.L.C., P. At. Butler, and A. Black, and Airs R. Hempie, wife of the .Minister of National Service. Messrs AJcKecn, Chapman, and Brindie had served long! terms on the Council. The thirteen Citizens candidates for the election for the Wellington Hospi-tal-Board were all successful, Labour failing to retain a seat Heading the Labour candidates - was Air C. H. Combs, M.P,, with 12.255 votes. 2561 fewer than the last successful candidate. Airs Semple, who at last election was third with 22,011 votes, was fifteenth with 11.724.
| The Citizens’ candidates were sucIcessful in gaining the four town scats on the Wellington Harbour Board. Citizens and Labour formerly held two seats each. The town members now arc Sir Charles Norwood (re-clectcd), Messrs AY. Appleton (re-elected), Al. Fraser, and H. 1,. Nathan. The defeated Labour candidates are Aiessrs R. AlcKeen, AI.P.. and C. H. Chapman, AI.P. Air J. AY. Andrews, the Citizens’ nominee, was re-elected Alayor of the city of Lower Hutt, and Labour lost three seats formerly held on the Council.
