CANDIDATES’ THANKS
MR MANSFORD’S ASSURANCE. In the course of the evening candidates for the different offices addressed the gathering in front of the “Alanawatu Standard” results hoard. The crowd was in excellent humour and practically every candidate came in for light-hearted banter.
First to take the stand was Air Mansion], who immediately called for three cheers for tlie other candidates for the Alayoralty, Alessrs Tcnnent ami Murphy. Air Alansford congratulated both on the magnificent fight they had put up. It had been a great contest, he said, and lie had enjoyed every minute of it.
“I want to thank tho citizens of Palmerston North for their continued confidence in me,” said Air Alansford. (Hear! Hear!) “The tvvo most pleased people in Palmerston North tonight are A 1 rs Alansford and myself, and we are the tvvo proudest. I said I would tell you from the platform, when the contest was over, 'what 1 would do in the next three years. . 1 will be occupying the Mayoral chair no matter what happens, for the next three vears.”
The game was now over, the speaker said, ami t.lie players were about to pull up the stumps and all plav for the city, ot which all were so proud. Ho thanked those who had voted for him. also his committee, particularly his ladies’ committee, those who lent their ears, Mr I*'. Jackson (chairman of the committee). Mr R. A. Brace (secretary), Air I). F. Smillic (in charge oi the transport arrangements), and Mrs Mansford for the manner in which she had worked the whole day long. Despite some suggestions that they were now l>ecoming old (laughter) they would both work as hard in the next three years as they had in the past. “J am the second horse in this race,'’ said Mr Tonnent. - ‘l do not know what sort of a dividend I will pay, but atj least I will return you a ‘place’ dividend. (Laughter.). 1 congratulate Air Mansford and hope the term will be' a happy one lor him, and one of benefit to the city. I have said, all the way through the campaign', that he has been a good Mayor. 1 wish to thank Air Murphy for the manner in which lie- conducted his campaign; lie fought a good and clean fight andI am quite sure that we will hear| more of him in Palmerston North.” j Air Tennent thanked those who voted for him, his committee and its chairman (Air J. G. Young). He added that he could take his defeat as a sportsman and had no ill-leeling toward anybody as a result of the fight. He lelt "sorry, however, for those who had worked on his behalf. It had been a pleasure for him to find so many friends around him. He had fought a fight in which he had retained the respect of others, and his own. “J am coining back again next time.” said Air Tonnent, “and I will win.”
Mr Murphy congratulated Mr Mansford on his success. At the conclusion of this terra of office Mr Marislord would have served 13 years as Mayor, lie said. While that was not a record, lie thought that it was a record of achievement for any one citizen in Palmerston North. Ho was lo bo congratulated on retaining the confidence of such a large number of the electors. Mr Murphy congratulated Air Tenneiit on the way he had conducted his campaign ; as far as the speaker was eoncorned, Mr Tenneiit had delivered hard knocks, but in a gentlemanly way. Air Afurphy thanked those who had been his friends, all who lent tlieir ears, who assisted his committee and who had supported him at the ballot box. To Afr ,T. U. Hardie. the town clerk, Air Alurphy extended thanks for forwarding the data the speaker had required from time to time. Afr Alanslord had said that if the speaker w_orq> elected he would give him every assistance. If in the next three years he (Afr Alurphy) could lie of any assistance. Air Afansford had only to call on him and he would help in every wav possible. Others to address the gathering were the .successful members in flic council election. Afessrs Heatley, Treniaine. Hodgcnfi. Smith, Smillie. Grigor (who submitted an apology from Mr Black, who was unable to !>o present), Lees and Opio, all thanking the electors for their election. At a later stage Afr Nash, who was re-elected a member of the Hospital Board. addressed the crowd and spoke of the importance of the Palmerston North Hospital in the hospital systeni of the North Island and also thanked those who had voted for him.
