Britland, of Ilawera, is spending a holiday in Pahiatua. At a meeting of the Pahiatua District High School Committee, Mr G. G. Taylor presiding, the visiting committee reported on the general appearance of the school and suggested several minor improvements The Education Board advised that Miss G. V. Dixon had been appointed infant mistress. Nurse G. E.’Chaplin''repotted there had been at the dental clinic 123 attendances during April and the total number of operations had been 332. The number of treatments completed were Pahiatua 25, Mangatainoka 36, Kohinui 16, Hamua 1; total 78. It was decided to hold the annual school party. The following from Eketahuna, who have been called up for military service, will enter camp at the beginning of Jun* to undergo three months’ intensive Territorial training:—J. E. AlcKcnna. J. \V. A. Coe, W. J. C. Olsen, W. A. Rolls, W. S. D. Ross, H. M. Smith, 11. W. G. Steer, F. R. Goggin, L. E. W. Goss. R. K. Shannon. There was a representative gathering of Red Cross members. V.A.D.’s, and transport members at the Wesley Hall when an address on “The History and the Work of the Rod Cross Society” was given by Aliss Tennent (director of voluntary aidl - for the Red Cross Society). Mr S. K Siddclls (president) presided and moved * vote of thanks to the speaker at ;lio conclusion of the address. At the end of the meeting it was resolved that Pahiatua be made a centre. Aliss Tennent pre-. sented the certificates for tho 60-hour hospital training to Misses E. Austin, J. Austin, L. Brown, M. McSherry, M. Tylce, G. Bisset and F. Buckingham. Mr W. IT. Watson (controller) was in the chair at (i meeting of the borough executive of the Emergency Precautions Scheme. A discussion took place on all information that had been received from the Government regarding this section of the emergency precautions scheme, and all matters considered necessary for the complete operation of the scheme in this district were. decided upon. Samples of evacuee identification cards, special armbands, .register and record sheets were examined, and an estimate of the number required was given. A request is to be made to the council to obtain these. As a result of the inquiries made in the borough and district as to the number of evacuees householders could accommodate in tne event of an emergency the following figures have been obtained : Pahiatua borough 305, Mangahao-Ballance .121. Alakairo-Kohinui 128, Mangaonc-Tane 17, Mangatainoka-Ruawhata 114. Konini 99. Tararua-Waiwcrc-Nikau-Marima 75, Ma-kuri-Kaitawa 109; total 968. There >s j little doubt that if the necessity arose the number could be substantially increased. In the event of a large number of evacuees arriving tbc depot would be temporarily transferred (o the Drill Hall. It was decided that the central depot of the organisation should be the Public Trust Office. The organisation within the borougn itself is a? follows: Mothers and babies, Plunkct nurse (Miss Tinkeham): Pliinket Society (Mrs 11. Paterson); school children, School t ommittce (Mr Cr. G. Tavior) : medical, nursing and health, Red Cross Society (Mr S. K. Siddclls), V.A.D.’s (Airs L. T. Herbert); sanitation and sleeping quarters, health inspector (Mr Swain) and two assistants; sewing and laundry, church guilds, Lady Galway : Guild (Mrs W. A. Bisset) ; kitchen. Women's Divisions (Airs Gilbert), Women’s Institute (Airs E. B. Watson); social and religious activities, patriotic entertainers (Mr J. W. Greaves), Ministers’ 'Association (Air Moore). At the annual meeting of the Pahiatua branch of the Farmers’ Union, strong exeepton was taken to the small capitation allowance of 4s a member received from tbc Wairarapa Farmers’ Union provincial district, to which Pahiatua is affiliated. It was pointed out that the allowance was very meagre and seriously curtailed the activities of tbc branch, as it had no other source of income. The Pahiatua branch is the strongest in the Wairarapa district, with a membership of more than 270. Its members’- subscriptions for tho year just ended totalled nearly £4OO, and' yet the amount, of its capitation allowance is only £sl. This sum was considered quite inadequate to carry on the business of the I branch, taking into consideration that it had to find its own office and a 6ecreta :J,-. The chairman stated that from each member's subscription (30s), 11s went to the Dominiqn executive; the Wairarapa provincial executive tot 15s. while Pahiatua received’the balance. 4s. Tho matter is to bo brought before the Wairarapa Provincial Executive by the president of the branch (Mr J. 11. Brcmner). 7 *
