In reply to the council's request to Mr J. V. G. Slack asking him if he were prepared to transfer io the council a strip or land in Lot 1, Long Mellord Road, for street widening purpuses, advice was received that -Mr slack was prepared to do this if the council would bear the expense of putting the title to the land in order. — The matter was deferred till the next meeting of the council. A letter was received in connection with the Emergency Precautions Scheme setting out details required from Lhe county in the way of information about accommodation and transport. —It was decided to endeavour to obtain the information by means of the Home Guard.
The engineer (Mr L. C. Pickering) reported that in the Taontii riding, since the Hood, the motor-grader had been concentrating on those roads on which metal had been scoured. In the Mangaone riding metal stocks had become seriously low, especially in the Bunnythorpe area, atid further screening of metal at James’s Line pit had been commenced, To Matai having required ail the available screened metal. In the Eitzherbert riding slips occurred on Hill Top and Kahuterawa Roads, but fortunately the Paliiatua Hill Road was continuously open and all Hawke’s Bay traffic used this route whilst the gorge was blocked. Messrs L. M. Abraham and L. H. Craw waited on the council Mr Abraham saying that they wished to try to reach some finality in the upkeep and improvement of the Main Drain Road. As this road had not been dedicated the council had not been able to spend money on it, although the rood was vital for access by dairy factory suppliers on the Craw estate. .Tim deputation asked that some provision be made to make the road usable for the winter, even if some temporary arrangement wore made. The council lias already applied to the Government for assistance in this matter, the chairman informing the deputation that the dedication was in process of being arranged and the council hoped that it would probably be able to get some subsidy from the Government for the work. He assured the deputation that the council was doing all it possibly could in the matter. After the deputation had withdrawn the council decided to write again to the Government asking for «. subsidy for this work and emphasising the urgency of its being carried out before the winter sets in.
