RANGIOTU BRIDGE

START IN COMING YEAR. A start with the new Rangiotu hridge over the Oroua River should be made in the coming year, said the chairman (Cr W. R. Hopcroft) at the meeting of the Kairanga County Council yesterday. Several protests about the bridge had been received during the year, he said, and he was pleased to state that progress towards finality was being made.

A Wellington engineering and surveying firm wrote advising that it had made a detailed report of the proposed bridge and had submitted preliminary plans to the Public Works Department. As soon as its reply had been received detailed drawings, which would probably take a month to six weeks to complete, could be made. The preliminary estimated cost of the work was £P2,354.

A letter received by the Manawatu County Council, yesterday, from the Kairanga County Council contained the estimated cost of the bridge and approaches. On the understanding that tenders would be called this year and that portion of the work, say to the value of £6OOO, would be completed before March 31, 1942, the council would be required to find an eighth share, approximately £750.
