MANAWATU COUNTY

f COUNCILLORS RK-JOLECTED. r l'lie monthly meeting of the Dlanawatu County Council was held yesterday. Cr W. E. Barber (chairman) presided and also present were Crs R. A. "Wilson, H. J. Fagan, "W. E. Pearce, I). W. Reid, J. Boyce, and A. N. Morcom. The clerk advised that all the members of the council had been re-elected unopposed. The representatives on the Hospital Board, the Power Board, and the Foxton Harbour Board had also l>een re-elected. The position was that there would not be any election in the county. The chairman congratulated the councillors on being returned, and said it was a sign of confidence in them. Cr Fagan felt that the absence of any new nominations reflected a want of interest in local body affairs. The county clerk said that it was a long time since the county had not had an election. Advice was received from the Associate Minister of National Service (Hon. D. "Wilson) that the Government had agreed to make a capitation grant of two shillings per head towards the expenses of members of the Home Guard until December 31 last, and at the rate of Is per head for each ensuing quarter. —The county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew) stated that the capitation was payable to the local body and not to the Home Guard Committee, which was the body created to control the organisation, and in his opinion this would prove a cumbersome method. The information on which the capita .ion would he payable would be in the hands of the Home Guard and not in the possession of the local body, which would therefore bo handicapped in administering the hinds. Dir H. V. Bond (county engineer), who is sub-area commander, reported that he understood that the area commander had represented the position to the Director of National Service and that as a consequence the capitation would he paid through the area commander to sub-area commanders. The tramway manager in his report stated that 308 tons of goods had lx>en handled during the month, also 4730 ft of timber. There was a debit for the month of £45 16s sd.

The treasurer reported that the county fund account at March 31 was in credit at £3778 3s 5d and the loan, account similarly placed at £2069 7s od. Receipts sirteo the last meeting totalled £460 3s Sd.

Tlie Palmerston Nortli Hospital Board advised that the council's levy for the year had been fixed at £0366 11s 4d.

The sanitary inspector (Mr S. B. Reed) reported that there had been one case of infectious disease during the period January to March. This had been a case of scarlet lever at Bainesse.

Mr W. J. Tantrum, Jvauwhata, sought permission to lav a water pine across Penny’s Line.—Agreed to. Mr J. B. Bradley, Penny’s Line, asked for permission to dig a drain on the roadway adjacent to his property. — Referred to the county engineer and Cr Pearce with power to act. Mr AY. D. Hingston, Awahuri Road, requested permission to fence off a portion of an abandoned road near the new stopbank on Awahuri Rond. —The council was unable to agree. Mr TT. E. Port, Lees Line, drew attention to the growth of gorso on the fillings on Awaliuri Road.—Referred to the county engineer.
