EFFECTS OF FLOOD
KAIRANGA COUNTY DAMAGE
REPORT TO COUNCIL
“Had the Orotta River and the Alangaone Stream been in simultaneous flood 1 hesitate to visualise the area that would have been inundated and the damage that would have been caused,” said the engineer (Air L. C. Pickering) in reporting on the effects of the recent floods to the meeting of the Kainanga County Council to-day. Air Pickering reported that the rains of Alav 3 and 4 caused the Aiaiiawatu River to rise to a very high level (191 t 3in) with resultant flooding of lUnd within the county, more so than in any flood since 1902. As it turned out. very little damage to county property and roads was sustained in relation to the areas flooded. The features of this flood were the inundation of the Te Alatai and Longbum areas and the heavy stock losses. The rise in the Alanawatu Gorge, i from information received, was 38ft I above normal. Practically all roads damaged had I since been repaired. Roads receiving most damage in the Taqnui riding were-: Maxwell’s Line, Walker’s Road, Hamilton’s Line, Ngaire (Street, and Lockwood Road ; in the Alangaone riding, Te Alatai Road, Koehler’s Road, and Robert’s Line; and in the Fitzlierbert riding, the only damage was through erosion when the Alanawatu River broke through in Air Anderson’s property at Aokautere and caused a washout on Gosling’s Road, which had I since been repaired and the road ’graded. COUNCIL'S SYAIPATHY.
The chairman (Air AV. R. Hoperolt) said that many of the Younoil's settlers had suffered heavily in the flood and at his suggestion the council passed a motion of sympathy with those who had lost stock and property.
