OBITUARY.

MRS J. B. YOUNG. At a private hospital in Palmerston North on April 21 the death occurred of Mrs Sara Anne Young, wife of Mr J. B. Young, in her 74th year, after a lengthy illness. Sirs Young, who had resided in the Manawatu district for the past 50 years, had made a large circle of friends. She was for 37 years a resident of Kauwhata. where she took much interest in the, district’s welfare. Her passing will be regretted by her many friends, who valued her sterling character and her ever ready desire to assist.

Born in Warwickshire, England, in 186 S, she arrived in New Zealand with her parents and nine brothers anl two sisters in 1886, at Napier, on the ship Arawa, commanded by Captain Stewart. After residing for a short time in Hawke's Bay, she married James John Hume, settling in the Manawatu, where he was employed by Hon. AH- Johnston, of Highden, Awahuri, head shepherd. He predeceased her in 1900. She again married, her husband being Mr John Benjamin Young, and they took up farming at Kauwhata. The surviving members of the family of Mrs Young are James John Hume (Kauwhata), Sydney, Herbert, Henry and Alex. Thomas Hume (Palmerston North and Kauwhata)

LATE HARRY NORMAN COOKE. Many friends will regret to learn of the death, recently, of AH H. N. Cooke, a well-known figure in business circles in Palmerston North. The deceased gentleman was born in London in 1863 and educated at Christ’s Hospital, the well-known Bluecoat School of that city. On leaving school he commenced his business career in a stockbroker’s office, but in 18S8 left for Australia, where he was for some years in business as an indent agent in Mellwurne. In 1903 lie came to New Zealand as representative for Messrs Peabody and Co., of New York. Since coming to Palmerston North in 1908 Air Cooke had, with the Exception of the war years, been with Messrs Holben and Kirk, Ltd. During the war Mr Cooke served in France with the 3rd ■Wellington Regiment, leaving with the 17th Reinforcements. His three sons also served in France at the same time, the father and two sons being wounded, but all returned safely to the Dominion, Mr Cooke being the only member of the family to reach Germany with the Army of Occupation. Joining the Returned Soldiers' Association on his return, Mr Cooke did good work for the returned men both as a member of the executive and on the committee of the Palmerston North Patriotic Society. The funeral, which took place from deceased’s late residence on Saturday, was largely attended. Rev. Canon "Woodward conducted the service, the interment being in the soldiers’ plot at Kelvin Grove Cemetery. The pallbearers were members of the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and business associations. Many beautiful floral tributes were deposited with the casket. The deceased gentleman is survived by Airs Cooke, who is at present in California, and his three sons—Captain A. C. Cooke. M.M., N./.1.5. (Gjsborne), Mr G. C. Cooke (president of Delaware Lackawanna Western Coal Co., New York), and Air L. C. Cooke (dairy instructor, of Te Kuiti), to whom has been extended the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
