HOROWHENUA COUNTY.

Ur. G. A. Alonk presided at the monthly meeting of the ilorowhenua County Council and other members present were Urs, L. 11. Best, J. D. Aitchison, A. AJ. Atkins, D. K. Guy, A. J. Gimhlett, A. M. Colquhoun and R. W. Jenkins. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr 11. J. Fowler, the traffic inspector, who died in the Palmerston North Hospital recently, was passed. Cr. Monk said that Mr Fowler was very assiduous in his duties and his death was regretted by all. The Internal Affairs Department wrote asking, that in view of the petrol shortage, additional polling booths be established for the local body elections. The Palmerston North Hospital Board advised that the levy on the council tor tlie current year was £6517 as against £6534 last year. Councillors expressed satisfaction at the reduction, Ihe chairman congratulated Cr. Girnliictt on his election to the Hospital Board and also e.vpttifcd regret that Cr. Ryder had found it necessary to retire, lie had given excellent service on the board. The Minister of Public Works advised that a committee had been set up to go into river protection and sought the views and any proposals tlie council might have. The chairman said that nobody could control the amount of rain that fell in 24 hours. Ho thought a select committee should be set ui) by the local bodies to consider tlie matter, but moved that, in view of tiie local body elections, no action be taken at present. Cr. Aitchison said that tlie subject was a far-reaching one and there were many drastic changes that could be brought about by it. The chairman’s motion was carried. The engineer (Mr J. T. M. Brewster) reported on improvements carried out during tlie month and that j six building permits of a total value I of £2562 had been issued. i
